Computer waste WEEE

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is the fastest growing waste stream in the EU – approx 9 million tonnes were generated in 2007 and this is expected to rise to 20 million tonnes by 2020.

All equipment that requires a source of electrical current to function is referred to as electrical or electronic equipment. As soon as this is discarded it becomes electrical or electronic waste WEEE.

The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive was brought in in July 2007 to prioritise waste prevention and help reduce landfill. It sets a target that 65% of IT equipment must be recycled.

This means electrical waste must be collected separately and recycled using specialist technology to remove certain substances and recover more materials.
